Interactive comment on “Aerosol-cloud interactions in the NASA GMI: model development and indirect forcing assessments” by N. Meskhidze et al

1. This study investigates the influence of varying meteorological fields and cloud droplet parameterizations on the aerosol indirect effect (AIE). While I know of previous studies comparing various droplet parameterizations, investigating the effect of varying the meteorology on the AIE is potentially more interesting. I also find the NASA GMI concept, where various model components can be int...

CCN Prediction error from application of Köhler Theory: Importance for the Aerosol Indirect Effect

In-situ observations of aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and the GISS GCM Model II’ with an online aerosol simulation and explicit aerosol-cloud interactions are used to quantify the uncertainty in radiative forcing and autoconversion rate from application of Köhler theory. Simulations suggest that application of Köhler theory introduces a 10-20% uncertainty in global average indirec...

Potential aerosol indirect effects on atmospheric circulation and radiative forcing through deep convection

[1] Aerosol indirect effects, i.e., the interactions of aerosols with clouds by serving as cloud condensation nuclei or ice nuclei constitute the largest uncertainty in climate forcing and projection. Previous IPCC reported negative aerosol indirect forcing, which does not account for aerosolconvective cloud interactions because the complex processes involved are poorly understood and represent...

Aerosol-Cloud Interactions In Global Models Of Indirect Aerosol Radiative Forcing

The sensitivity of cloud optical properties with respect to parameters that affect aerosol activation is examined. Of particular interest are the effect of volatile gases (such as HNOs), slightly soluble and surfactant species. An adiabatic parcel model is used to simulate cloud droplet formation. Cloud optical properties are calculated from these simulations.
